Adoption & Pet Ownership

What should I consider before adopting a dog or a cat?
For dogs, consider: size, breed, shedding, grooming needs, diet, energy level, age, living area, learning ability, and dominance level.

For cats, consider: breed, hair length, shedding, grooming needs, diet, energy level, age, and living area.
What supplies will I need for a new pet?
Dog supplies: brush, comb, shampoo, rubber mat, nail clippers, towel, ear treatment, collar and leash, food and water bowls, bed, toys, and a grooming/care guide.

Cat supplies: brush, comb, litter box, cat litter, collar, ear treatment, food and water bowls, bed, toys, scratching post, and a grooming/care guide.
Why should I have my pet spayed or neutered?

Spaying and neutering helps reduce pet overpopulation and can improve your pet’s overall health and behavior. These procedures help prevent unwanted litters and support responsible pet ownership in our community.

Is it healthier for my pet to be fixed?

Spaying or neutering can help pets live longer, healthier lives. Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer.

Why should I get a pet tag and microchip my pet?
Pet Tag — Immediate Identification
A collar tag can include your pet’s name, your phone number, and other helpful information. Tags allow someone to contact you quickly if your pet is found.

Microchip — Permanent Identification
A microchip is a tiny electronic chip implanted under the skin. When scanned, it links to your contact information in a registry database and can help reunite you with your pet if they are lost.

Livestock & Permits

What is a livestock permit? Why do I need it?

A livestock permit is required for individuals raising, keeping, or maintaining livestock and/or fowl on a tract of land smaller than five acres within the City of Gatesville. Permits help ensure compliance with local animal regulations, safety, sanitation, and property requirements.
